When I was playing jazz full-time, I used to travel a lot. People always thought I was crazy, because I hated being on the road. Here’s a tip: No matter where you are, there are stores. Stores with hoards of people shopping. Stores with big, ugly signs advertising all the ugly shit inside. It’s the exact same shit you find in America, Micky Mouse T-shirts, Bart Simpson posters, sexy fashion models. But, it’s harder to tune it out because in Paris or Barcelona, it’s slightly different, just enough to fool you, for one split second, into thinking their crap might be of a nobler quality than our crap. This momentary deception is incredibly exhausting.
